Australian blue mussels primarily thrive in the clear waters of southern Australia, ensuring a relatively stable supply almost year-round. They are highly fresh and often exported live.
Live blue mussels are incredibly flavorful, with tender, smooth flesh unmatched by other mussels. Live blue mussels air-freighted to port are packaged using gas-barrier materials.
Appearance: The shell is a unique blackish-blue (or dark blue-black). They are relatively small, typically about inches long, smaller than New Zealand green-lipped mussels, but with more plump flesh.
Flesh and Flavor: Rich in umami, with a strong briny taste, the flesh is tender, smooth, and sweet without any gristle. Its natural umami flavor requires minimal seasoning to highlight its original taste.
Nutrition: Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, folic acid, and other essential vitamins and minerals, making it a healthy seafood choice.
Blue mussels are best enjoyed in simple cooking methods to highlight their freshness:
• Mussels with white wine cream sauce
• Paella
• Baked mussels with pasta/garlic butter
• Steamed or boiled in white wine
Handling Tips: When purchasing live mussels, choose fresh ones with tightly closed shells or those that close when gently tapped. Wash and remove the whiskers before cooking.
If not consumed immediately after receiving the mussels, store in the refrigerator at 0-4ºC and consume as soon as possible to maintain freshness.
